BONITA (CBS 8) - A dog is dead after attacking an off-duty National City police officer.

The incident happened Saturday at the Summit Meadows Campground in Bonita.

Witnesses say the officer was walking his small dog on a leash when a larger dog got loose and charged at them.

That's when the officer drew his gun and fired.

"The National City Police Department officer, off-duty, grabbed his off-duty weapon and fired several rounds at the dog, striking it and causing the dog to retreat," said SDSO Sgt. Fred Magana.

The dog collapsed and was taken to the animal shelter where it later died.

Both the San Diego Sheriff's Department and the National City Police Department are investigating the shooting.
