SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego police say the gun a 12-year-old boy used to fatally shoot himself at a Boy Scout camp on Fiesta Island was not registered.

The medical examiner has identified the boy as William Shook.

Police found him in a tent with a gunshot wound to his upper torso Monday morning. Shook died at the scene.

Investigators believe Shook brought the gun to the camp from Las Vegas, where he lived.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 12-year-old boy took his own life by shooting himself in the chest during a Boy Scout outing on Fiesta Island, authorities reported.

Officers responding to the gunfire in the 1000 block of Fiesta Island Road shortly after 7:30 a.m. found the child in a tent, suffering from at least one self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to San Diego police. A pistol was nearby.

The boy, a Las Vegas resident, died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The caller who initially reported the shooting described it as an attempted suicide, SDPD public-affairs Officer Matt Tortorella said.

Detectives were "conducting many witness interviews to ascertain how a gun became involved in this tragedy," homicide Lt. Mike Hastings said.

The boy had traveled to San Diego over the weekend along with his scout troop for a week-long camping trip at Mission Bay, according to police.
