New Broadway Pier to open on the 4th

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diegans will have a new way to enjoy Fourth of July fireworks over San Diego Bay.

The newly renovated Broadway Pier on the waterfront will be open to the public.

On Tuesday, day the city and port officials showed off the almost completed first phase of the new waterfront plan. It includes the pier, public art installations and a shaded promenade.

The city says on the Fourth, it will all be ready.

"This is all about our city's front porch. We've been working on this for literally decades, and so as we're getting close to construction being completed, you can see it taking shape," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said.

The city says the entire first phase of the project, including shops and a restaurant, will be open by October.
