Rehabilitated bobcat released back into the wild

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – It's a big day at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona.

After undergoing rehabilitation, a male bobcat is getting released back into the wild.

One month ago, a Descanso homeowner spotted the starving bobcat with a bad limp. The animal was taken to the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, where he weighed in at less than nine pounds -- half the normal weight of adult bobcat.

The cat was suffering from an old fractured leg and looked sick to the stomach, which he was. Veterinarians performed blood work and found intestinal parasites.

Now, about four weeks later, the bobcat is healthy. He's snarling and trying to bite the staff, which is a good sign.

"It's a very good sign. He has been in an enclosure and taken care of once a day to feed and clean, and other than that totally left alone so he wouldn't get used to people and he would be as wild as can be when he goes back out into the wild," Mirjam Schippers said.

Some of the footage in this video report was filmed using a GoPro camera.
