Cordiano Winery: A slice of Italy in Escondido

Posted: Updated:

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - Just off the snaky two-lane that is Highland Valley Road, hidden on a windswept hilltop, sits Cordiano Winery, and when you walk around her house and onto the grounds, Rosa knows exactly what you are going to say.

"Oh my god, we didn't know you had this," she said.

Her husband Gerardo bought this property in 1991, because it reminded him of home.

"A lot people who come from Italy, from Europe come out here and visit the place said, 'Boy, I wouldn't believe that this is so similar to southern Italy, where we came from," he said.

Together this husband and wife team of 41 years converted a 30-acre avocado farm into an award-winning winery.

"We've always been in business together," Rosa said.

"All kinds of business, even monkey business," Gerardo said.

In 2002, they opened Cordiano Winery with their signature wine, the cabernet sauvignon.

"Also we have a blend we just call a trinity," Gerardo said.

But Cordiano isn't just about tasting. They provide the total wine experience.

"Get a glass of wine, sit out at a table, enjoy the afternoon. That's the best experience we can give them," Gerardo said.

The winery also offers a limited menu of wood-baked stone oven pizzas and salads and bread sticks. There's a bocce ball court and a balcony for private parties that can accommodate up to 150.

"Special events, weddings, any kind of party you can think of. We'll provide the food and we'll provide the fun," Rosa said.

The Cordiano Winery is open Wednesday through Sunday, and closed on Fourth of July.

"The view is unbelievable," Rosa said.

"It just looks like home," Gerardo said.

A place so close to home, an experience that's worlds away.
