New app helps reunite lost dogs with owners

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The County Department of Animal Services is hoping a new app will help San Diegans find lost pets who may get scared off during the Fourth of July fireworks.

Finding Rover is a free app that uses facial recognition to match dogs with their owners. The owner takes a picture of the dog's face and registers it with the app.

Whoever finds the dog can take a photo and see if it matches any dog within the database.

Finding Rover is available for iPhone, Android and on computers.

"All it takes is just taking a photograph of your dog's face and either through the phone or through your computer, getting it registered," Daniel DeSousa of the Department of Animal Services said.

A recent survey found nearly one in five pets go missing after being scared by the sound of fireworks, thunderstorms or other loud noises.
