Baby falls to death from third-story window in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - A South Bay family is grieving after an 11-month-old girl fell to her death out of a third-story window Tuesday.

It happened at around 6:40 p.m. Monday at an apartment complex on the 1200 block of Santa Cora Avenue in Chula Vista. According to neighbors, the girl fell from the window onto the cement below.

The girl was then taken to a nearby park and was picked up by a helicopter and taken to Rady Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

When neighbors saw the scene, they knew something was wrong.

"We saw a young man and wife standing there and they said something happened with a child," resident Deanna Lewis said.

Later Tuesday, investigators confirmed a bed was directly underneath the window, which would have given the baby easy access to it.

"I'm a grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of five, just..no em uh. I just feel for those parents," Lewis said.

"It's not easy for anyone involved -- fire, paramedics, PD, our hearts go out to the family...our condolences," said Sgt. Giaime. Trauma experts at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego say it's the first infant death from a fall in recent years.

Experts are weighing in on how this could have been avoided.

"This is a tragedy and it's the time of year that we like to get the message out to parents, there are a couple of key things you can do. Keep beds and furniture away from the windows and make sure window guards or stops are installed to keep windows from opening no more than four inches," Renee Douglas, with Rady Children's Hospital Trauma Program, said.

Last year, Rady Children's trauma team treated 61 children who fell from buildings, and 67 cases in 2012.

Both of the child's parents were home, and preliminary investigations suggested the fall was accidental. Family Protection Unit detectives were sent to investigate, police said.
