Man, 56, sentenced in dog mauling of toddler

MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California man has been sentenced to a year in county jail and three years' probation for the 2010 fatal mauling of his 2-year-old stepgrandson by three pit bulls.

The Contra Costa Times reported Monday that 56-year-old Steven Hayashi, convicted of involuntary manslaughter in April, could have been sent to prison for 10 years.

Contra Costa Superior Court Judge John Kennedy noted that Hayashi had never been arrested before July 2010, when three of his five pit bulls attacked Jacob Bisbee.

The toddler was killed by the dogs after being left unsupervised and walking into an unlocked garage where the animals were kept.

Prosecutors say the boy had more than 100 bite marks.

Jacob's mother pleaded for lenience for Hayashi, calling the death an accident. She said Hayashi cared for her son.
