Mexican national set to be sentenced in molestation case

VISTA (CNS) - A Mexican national who molested a young relative when she was between 6 and 8 years old is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday at the Vista Courthouse.

Antonio Cervantes Sarmiento, 36, pleaded guilty in May to five counts of committing a forcible lewd act on a child and will be sentenced to 48 years in state prison. He was arrested following a routine traffic stop in Escondido on April 11, 2012.

When he was unable to provide a driver's license or other identification to the officer who pulled him over for making an unsafe lane change, Sarmiento gave a fake name and incorrect date of birth, said Escondido police Lt. Mike Loarie.

Loarie said the officer then called in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field agent, after which Sarmiento admitted that he was a Mexican national in the United States illegally.

While being processed at Escondido police headquarters, Sarmiento's true identity was confirmed and officers learned that he was named in an outstanding child molestation arrest warrant issued by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department a month earlier, Loarie said.
