SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Aviators needed a victory by its men's doubles team of Somdev Devvarman and Raven Klaasen in a super tiebreaker to defeat the Philadelphia Freedoms, 20-19, Tuesday night in a World TeamTennis match at the Valley View Casino Center.
Philadelphia (1-1) forced the match into overtime when Frank Dancevic and Marcelo Melo defeated Devvarman and Klaasen, 5-3, cutting the Aviators lead to 19-18.
Under World TeamTennis rules, if the trailing team wins the final set, the match goes into overtime, which continues until the leading team wins one game or the match score is tied. Dancevic and Melo won the lone overtime game, forcing a super tiebreaker, which Devvarman and Klaasen won 7-1, giving the Aviators their second victory in two nights.
The Aviators led 16-13 entering the final set thanks to a 5-1 victory in women's doubles by Daniela Hantuchova and Kveta Peschke over Liezel Huber and 18-year-old Taylor Townsend.
Devvarman, the NCAA Division I men's singles champion in 2007 and 2008 while playing for the University of Virginia, and the highest player from India on the Association of Tennis Professionals singles rankings, opened the match with a 5-2 victory over Dancevic.
Hantuchova lost in women's singles for the second consecutive night, losing to Townsend, 5-2, tying the score, 7-7. The Freedoms took a 12-11 lead entering the halftime break with a 5-4 victory by its mixed doubles team of Melo and Huber over Klaasen and Peschke.
Tennis legend Billie Jean King was honored at halftime, receiving a surfboard with a 1975 picture of her holding the plate she received for winning that year's Wimbledon women's singles title. King is the owner of the Freedoms and majority owner of the league.
King was among the league's founders and played for the Freedoms in the league's inaugural 1974 season, inspiring her friend Elton John to co-write the chart-topping 1975 song "Philadelphia Freedom."
The Aviators will play at Austin Wednesday and return to the arena formerly known as the San Diego Sports Arena Thursday to face the Texas Wild.
