Man drowns after disappearing from Carlsbad beach

CARLSBAD (CBS 8/CNS) - A body found near an Oceanside beach Thursday was believed to be that of a 21-year-old man who was presumed drowned after disappearing in the waters off Carlsbad State Beach, fire officials said.

The man, identified as David Velasco, was walking in the water about 20 feet from the shore in the vicinity of Pine Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard with his 18-year-old brother when he disappeared around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Carlsbad Fire Department.

Neither of the brothers could swim, and the stretch of beach where the victim went missing was not patrolled by lifeguards, Deputy Chief Mike Lopez said.

The initial search, which involved boats, divers, helicopters and county and federal agencies, was called off after about two hours. The U.S. Coast Guard continued to patrol until about 1 a.m., fire officials said.

Lifeguards resumed the recovery effort Thursday morning, and a body was found less than two miles north, in the vicinity of Cassidy and South Pacific streets about 20 feet from shore, according to fire officials.

"They were overtaken by a small wave. The brother turned around and saw his brother was missing. Right now we have steep beach profile conditions," Robin Greene with the Department of Parks and Recreation said.

Velasco's family was seen Thursday at the location where he was discovered. They declined to talk on camera.

Lifeguards are warning beachgoers of the strong current and steep conditions along the shore.
