16-year-old San Diego girl missing in Hawaii

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - New information Sunday in the case of a 16-year-old girl from San Diego who went missing on the Big Island in Hawaii, during a family vacation.

Police in Hawaii tell CBS News 8 that Jasmine Keilani, a Torrey Pines High School student, has been in contact with her mother since disappearing on Tuesday.

Officers say the teenager left on her own, but because she is a minor they are taking this case seriously, passing out fliers and following up on several leads.

Family friend Saha Sadeghi and her husband Ayman Kabakibi live down the street from the Keilanis in San Diego. Ayman spoke to them right before they left.

“They told me this was the best vacation - they had been waiting for it,” Ayman said. “I wished them happy vacation. I asked if there was anything I could do - she asked if I could keep an eye on the house.”

Police say Jasmin was last seen on Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona, which is located on the western side of the Big Island. However, they haven't released many details about the circumstances.

Police say the 5 foot 5, 125 pound, teen was wearing a tie-dyed top with faded denim shorts. A photo was posted to her Instagram account the day before she disappeared -- there have been no posts to the account since.

Ayman is desperately hoping Jasmine comes home.

“Very nice family - both parents are very hard working - the kids are very well behaved, there are no issues at all - the girl is super nice, very studious,” he said. “It’s very unfortunate, I’m totally shocked.”

CBS News 8 spoke to Jasmine's mother on the phone earlier Saturday -- she declined our request for an interview. She said she just wants Hawaiian police to handle the investigation.
