SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was apparently strangling his girlfriend near the Old Town trolley station was arrested Saturday after leading police on a brief foot chase, police said.

A helicopter and police canines were involved in the search for the man, who was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s and about 5 feet 7, Stafford said. A perimeter was established to help police find him in the busy tourist area.

The search began after a 911 caller told police around 4:15 p.m. that a man was strangling a woman near the Old Town trolley stop at Congress Street and San Diego Ave., Stafford said.

Officers apparently approached the suspect and used pepper spray to try to detain him before he fled the scene on foot, according to a police report.

The man was arrested about 4:36 p.m. a few blocks from the trolley station on Ampudia Street, Stafford said.
