Tony Gwynn mural at downtown gym

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Several local artists are paying tribute to "Mr. Padre" in a special way.

They're painting a huge mural of the Padres' famous number 19 on the wall of a downtown gym. It's still a work in progress, but you can already recognize the outline of what the mural will look like when it's completed.

The owner of the gym says allowing the artists to paint on his building was a no-brainer.

"When he approached us about doing a Tony Gwynn memorial, it wasn't a question of if not, it was like how soon can you do it," Joel Rocco said.

The artist hopes to be done by July 19, which is the 32nd anniversary of Tony Gwynn's first day with the Padres.
