Pesky problem: Fleas invade Linda Vista Elementary

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Students are coming home with bites from a flea infestation at Linda Vista Elementary School.

Spokesperson for the San Diego Unified School District, Linda Zintz says Test Management has fumigated Linda Vista Elementary School three times in the past week but the problem won’t go away.

“The custodian put some special spray on the edges,” said fifth grade student Max Padilla.

His mother says she didn’t know at first why her son had red bites on his arms and back, she thought she was going to have to take him to the doctor.

"He ended up having some kind of rash on his face and side of his back,” said Monica Padilla.

Some of the other parents at Linda Vista Elementary school didn’t know why their kids were coming home from school with bites.

“I’m at home thinking why are you guys getting... I’m thinking spider bites,” said John Thomas.

He has two sons at the school and says no one from the elementary school alerted him about the flea problem.

“They never sent anything home. I didn't see anything. I knew the thing was closed whenever I came to pick up my kids,” said Thomas.

Zintz told CBS News 8 she doesn’t know what is causing the flea infestation. Parents suspect the fleas could have hopped from pillows and blankets brought from home during movie night.

The district spokesperson says the school auditorium will be fumigated again on Wednesday.

Fifth grade promotion is scheduled for Monday July 21 in the Linda Vista Elementary auditorium but has been moved to Montgomery Middle School at 11:30 a.m.

The San Diego Health Department says you can treat flea bites with calamine lotion. If the irritation persists see a doctor and frequently vacuum your home especially in dark and cooler areas and under furniture and wash bedding.
