Authorities search for driver in dangerous chase

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist in a silver Jaguar sped away from a traffic stop on Interstate 8 Wednesday and led officers on a chase through Mission Valley to Ocean Beach and back again before pulling into an underground parking garage and escaping on foot, police reported.

A motorcycle officer pulled over the westbound driver on suspicion of speeding on the freeway near College Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

As the officer was walking toward the car, the motorist took off, SDPD Officer Frank Cali said.

Police pursued the driver to the western end of I-8 and followed him as he exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, turned around and doubled back onto the freeway.

The fleeing man soon got off the interstate again and continued along surface streets briefly, then pulled into a parkade at a shopping center in the 7500 block of Hazard Center Drive, Cali said.

By the time officers found the car, the suspect, identified as 54-year-old Jose Luis Gonzales, was gone. They searched the area but were unable to find him.

Gonzales is wanted on several felony warrants, according to police.

In 2006, the city of San Diego began allowing political campaigns to electronically file their financial reports, giving the public easy access to information on money in city politics. The county of San Diego wasn’t as quick to make the same kind of information available and continues to lag behind the city’s efforts.
