First pediatric patient receives proton therapy

MIRA MESA (CBS 8) - A Utah teen who's battled a brain tumor for the past 15 years has become San Diego's first pediatric patient to receive a specialized cancer therapy.

Seventeen-year-old Natalie Wright underwent her final round of proton therapy cancer treatment Friday morning at the Scripps Proton Therapy Center in Mira Mesa.

Over the past month, she's had 30 treatments, reaching parts of the tumor that previous treatments could not.

Before returning to Utah, Natalie thanked the hospital staff and told CBS News 8 what's next for her:

"I'm going to miss the people for sure, they have all been so wonderful. We're lucky Dr. Chang will order the MRIs and then schedule appointments in Utah, we'll probably see him yearly.”

The Scripps Proton Therapy Center is just one of 15 nationwide for this treatment.
