Sand sculptors compete at Imperial Beach

IMPERIAL BEACH (CBS 8) - Some of the best on the beach stepped forward Saturday for the Imperial Beach Sun and Sea Festival

Artists took part in the competition to create some jaw-dropping sand sculptures.

Some of the creations take months to plan but builders have only a few hours to sculpt them into shape for the judges.

"Everything makes a difference... the different kinds of sand, the sun conditions... There's just so many different, um, variables that we have to consider," Leonard Gonzales Jr. said.

The Sun and Sea Festival takes the place of the U.S. Open Sandcastle competition that was held for 30 years in Imperial Beach.
