SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was struck in his head with a baseball bat and severely injured by a witness trying to get him to stop assaulting his girlfriend near City Heights, police said Tuesday.

The 18-year-old man was involved in a physical altercation with the woman in the vicinity of Fairmount Avenue and Dwight Street about 9:30 p.m. Monday, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

A witness intervened and began fighting with the man. At some point during that fight, the witness struck the woman's assailant with the bat, Delimitros said.

The injured man was taken to a hospital with a life-threatening injury, Delimitros said. The woman was not injured, he said.

The witness was initially detained for questioning but was not arrested, Delimitros said.
