Night lizards on display at San Diego Zoo

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Visitors to the San Diego Zoo can now get a look at the rare night lizard.

The lizard is native to three of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. It was placed on the endangered species list in 1977 when its habitat was threatened by feral goats and pigs.

The animals were removed in 1992 and since then, the lizard population has recovered.

Zookeepers say maintaining a population of the lizards at the zoo will ensure the survival of the species, even if their natural habitat is damaged again.
