Plane crashes in Kearny Mesa parking lot; 1 dead

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - A plane crashed into a commercial parking lot near state Route 163 Wednesday, killing one occupant and injuring another.

According to the FAA, the plane -- identified as a Mooney M20 -- bounced while attempting to land, continued westbound and went down, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The aircraft then apparently struck the top of a Target store and a light pole before crashing near a Costco store in the 7800 block of Othello Avenue just west of the airport.

Vince Carter, a helicopter pilot, told CBS News 8 he had heard a transmission from the pilot of the M20 tell the control tower that she had lost power and was going down.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small blaze caused by the crash, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. Medics transported the pilot, a woman in her 50s, and her passenger, believed to be 80, to a trauma center for treatment of "major" injuries, he said. The older woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Swanson.

One witness who suffered minor injuries helping get the women out of the wrecked aircraft was transported to the hospital.

Investigators from the FAA remained at the scene early Wednesday evening talking to witnesses.
