SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - A man is in the hospital Thursday morning, after he was shot by police in De Anza Cove.

San Diego police got a report of a 46-year-old man armed with a gun and making threats in the 2800 block of North Mission Bay Drive in Mission Beach shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said.

Officers tried in vain to persuade the man to drop the weapon and surrender. He grabbed a gun from a Toyota Prius. A standoff ensued and lasted for nearly an hour before gunfire rang out. It was not immediately clear who fired, the lieutenant said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was shot once in the stomach area and was in critical but stable condition as of mid-afternoon Wednesday.

CBS News 8 went the Clairemont neighborhood where the Prius was registered. Detectives were seen questioning a woman. A neighbor who lives next to the woman didn't want to identify herself but said the suspect was married and had two young children.

"A nice guy, very neighborly, he always came out to help if something was going on and was always a good neighbor to us," said the neighbor.

Initial reports indicated that the man may have had intentions of killing himself, Mayer said.

The suspect is in critical but stable condition at Scripps La Jolla.
