Attempted murder suspect arrested after SWAT standoff, manhunt

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The subject of an early morning manhunt and SWAT standoff in Rolando was arrested in downtown San Diego Thursday without incident.

Attempted murder suspect Odie James Miller, 20, was wanted in connection to the stabbing of a 44-year-old man at Renaissance Avenue and Towne Centre Drive in University City Wednesday.

"I understand it was a completely unprovoked attack so I don't understand the motive at this time," SDPD Lt. David Nisleit said.

Police were dispatched to the 4300 block of Rolando Boulevard near Malcolm Drive shortly before 2:30 a.m., San Diego police Sgt. David Jennings. A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department special response team was dispatched around the same time, according to the agency. Authorities tried to arrest an attempted murder suspect - believed to be hiding in his grandmother's house.

Eventually the situation came to an end, after police used a bull horn repeating orders for the suspect to surrender. During the incident, the SWAT team also used a robot to check every room of the house and the basement. Neighbors were instructed to remain inside their homes and area streets were blocked.

Miller, who sometimes goes by the last name Milwerder, was apprehended by officers later Thursday morning at Broadway and Park. The initial reports that the suspect was hiding in his grandmother's house have yet to be confirmed by police. According to neighbors, their surveillance video shows Miller leaving the home.

The stabbing victim suffered injuries to his head, neck, torso, arms and hands. He's expected to survive.
