Man hit, killed by freight train in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - A 22-year-old man was struck and killed by a freight train while trying to cross the tracks in Carlsbad Village.

Witnesses say he was celebrating his sister's birthday at a nearby bar and made a fatal mistake.

Crews are now cleaning up after the tragic accident as investigators returned Friday morning to continue their detective work.

The man was struck by a northbound freight train. Sheriff's Rail Enforcement deputies were called before 11:30 p.m. Thursday to Grand Avenue and State Street in Carlsbad.

According to witnesses, as the train was approaching the victim tried to walk across the railroad tracks before he was killed.

The 22-year-old was hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train.

Taxi driver, Gustavo Delacruz, witnessed the tragic accident unfold. He rushed to the scene with another cab driver to try and help.

"We turned on our lights from our cell phone to go look. It sounded like a potato sack when he was hit. It was horrible scene," Gustavo said.

Authorities say the grade crossing warning system was working properly at the time.

It's too early to tell if alcohol or drugs were involved. That's still under investigation.

The man's identity has not been released yet and an autopsy will be performed.
