CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A six-year-old South Bay girl went missing during a visit to a relative's home Friday, prompting an intensive three-hour search that ended when she was found unharmed.

Alycea Mendez was dropped off at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Oxford Street about 9 a.m. by her mother, who watched the girl walk toward her aunt's rental unit, according to police.

About 2 1/2 hours later, the aunt called the mother to ask about Alycea's whereabouts.

"The child never apparently reached the aunt's apartment," Capt. Lon Turner said.

Patrol officers fanned out through the area to look for the girl with help from a sheriff's helicopter and search-and-rescue personnel.

About 2:30 p.m., police determined that Alycea was in the custody of another relative. The child was then reunited with her mother, the captain said.
