SDPD focuses on recruitment and retention issues

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS) - The San Diego Police Department is facing serious staffing issues.

They invited members of the community to help find solutions to the problem last night.

One of the main issues is that the department is now very young because officers are leaving faster than they can be replaced.

"Almost 60 percent of our department is under five years. I think that's a serious issue,” explained Brian Marvel the president of the San Diego Police Officer's Association. “If I was a citizen, I'd be extremely concerned about that because you want officers with experience to be able to mentor the younger folks coming on.”

The San Diego Police Department hopes the city council will review their contract so that they can prevent officers from leaving for better-paying jobs in nearby communities.
