Coastal commission approves I-5 expansion plan

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The California Coastal Commission has unanimously approved a $6.5 billion, 40 year plan to improve transportation in the North County.

The central and most controversial part is the addition of four express lanes to a 27 mile stretch of Interstate 5 between Oceanside and La Jolla.

Critics say the plan, developed by Caltrans and SANDAG, puts too much emphasis on widening the freeway and not enough on alternative modes of transportation.

The plan call for improvements to rail lines, bicycle and pedestrian trails. However, it still faces several financial and legal hurdles.
