Family driven from home by flames, heavy smoke

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a family home in Lakeside.

LAKESIDE (CBS 8) - Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a family home.

The fire broke out just before 12:45 a.m. Friday with heavy smoke and flames coming from a bedroom on the top floor.

Firefighters knocked a hole in the roof at the 9500 block of Prospect Avenue in Lakeside.

The fire chief says they tried to get to the bottom of a fireplace where the flames may have first started.

Crews helped salvage some furniture and belongings but there is heavy water, smoke and fire damage on both floors.

Nobody was hurt but the house could be a total loss.

Crews say the wooden frame house created aggressive flames, and it was tough to attack.

"I think we'll be here until daylight this is a longstanding hardworking fire it's longstanding and it'll take a few hours to put to bed," Andy Parr, Lakeside Fire Chief said.

Homeowners were able to rescue their pet bird but they watched in shock as their Lakeside house burned.

They are now being helped by the Red Cross. The family did not want to go on camera and say this is difficult to comprehend but they are thankful they are safe.

Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the fire.
