Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article recently published on a top dentistry website. The full article, which was published on 5 August 2014, can be read here.

Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester said The main cause of deteriorating dental health in hospital patients is malnutrition in older patients. The Journal of Clinical Periodontology shows that oral health is not being taken into consideration by hospitals throughout the country. A study was conducted using one hundred and sixty two patients that were evaluated over a two week hospital stay, many of which had an increase in gum disease and plaque during their stay.

Tariq Drabu went on to say Hospitals dont have oral health policies in place, which is something that needs to be introduced urgently. Simple policies such as an improvement in food choices to oral health processes can make a significant change in the oral health of patients.

Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying In the meantime all we can do, as dental professionals, is to educate our patients on oral health care while they are in hospital. Families can also play an important role in the oral care of patients who are in hospital by ensuring that they are brushing and flossing, eating healthy choices and that there oral care is met. Some patients are bed ridden during their time in hospital, but something as simple as a family member bringing some water and fluoride toothpaste can make a difference to their overall dental health for when they get back home.
