Search and Rescue teams practice roping skills

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's as close to the real thing as you can get.

Saturday, volunteers with the Sheriff's Search and Rescue team took to some very steep slopes to hone their skills.

Rescue teams took part in an eight hour training session. They practiced harnessing and pulling up a simulated injured hiker to safety.

The session involved putting together complicated rope systems in less than ideal situations.

Rescue officials say the realistic training is necessary.

"We're not doing anything different today than we would do in a real environment,” said Search and Rescue leader Eric Hanigan. “Because we do have someone in the litter today, we're not cutting any corners, we're making sure everything is safe and we're not ruining our equipment or injuring anybody.”

Saturday's session was an advanced roping class offered to trainees who complete the Search and Rescue Academy.
