Charity stuffs backpacks for kids in need

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – It's not quite back-to-school yet, but hundreds of backpacks are being filled to get kids ready.

Social Advocates for Youth are stuffing backpacks with school supplies for students. Volunteers are packing hundreds of backpacks to help low income families with their back-to-school needs.

All of the backpacks were donated, and each comes complete with crayons, pens, notebooks and the rest of the essentials. About 500 students will receive the backpacks.

This is the culmination of three months of collecting school supplies from the community, including 15 area businesses that set up collection bins in their offices. Dozens of generous individuals donated as well.

"The average school supplies for families cost more than $600 per school year. This is a way that we can help, and it alleviates that hard choice of well, you can have new shoes or a new backpack or school supplies. The kids have everything they need, they're not embarrassed walking in the first day," SAY San Diego CEO Nancy Gannon Hornberger said.

This SAY San Diego school supply drive is over for this year. All of the backpacks have been claimed already, but the organization helps tens of thousands of families all year round.
