Le Rendez-Vous: Tasty Parisian pastry

OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) - In a muted, unadorned Oceanside Boulevard strip mall, a family of authentic French bakers are out to build a better donut.

"This is a very authentic French bakery and pastries," Seng Moua said.

For seven years now, Seng Moua and his family have set up shop at Le Rendez-Vous. Every day begins with freshly-baked baguettes.

"They make them right here in the store every morning," Seng said.

Baguettes are the staff of life, flour power for the French palate, and they vie for attention with eye-candy delicacies that pop out of the deli case. Showstoppers like lusciously layered eclairs, festive fruit tarts, tempting tiramisus, rainbowed macarons and beloved bread pudding. And then, there's the cronut. Say what? The cronut and it's not what it appears to be.

"It looks like a donut, but it's not a donut," Seng said. Basically, it is a pastry like a croissant, layered out, has a filling like a donut."

The cronut is made by Le Rendez-Vous' Laos-born, classically trained Paris pastry chef Neng Nheayely.

"The cronut is a special croissant dough. You can fry like a donut. So it's still flakey and fluffy like a croissant, but smells very good, like a donut," Neng said. "We fill that cronut with a nice creamy custard."

At a family owned bakery, the hours are long. The profit margins at times thin, but dollars to cronuts, the joy of cooking at Le Rendez-Vous is often its own reward. It's a doughy dream with an Asian-French theme, a source of pride in Oceanside.
