Floods force interstate closure north of Phoenix

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) — Flooding from heavy rain in the Phoenix area has forced authorities to close several major roads, including a portion of Interstate 17 about 25 miles north of the city.

Authorities say firefighters rescued multiple motorists from vehicles trapped by floodwaters.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for much of the metro area and said up to 2 inches of rain fell in some spots in about an hour Tuesday morning.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan (san-tee-YAHN') said firefighters from Phoenix and the Daisy Mountain Fire District on Phoenix's northern outskirts rescued at least six motorists in separate incidents.

Santillan says no injuries were reported.

He says many of the rescues occurred in places where roads go through dips that were flooded.

Flooding has also closed several other roads north of Phoenix.
