SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Navy's Pacific commander spoke to the San Diego Military Advisory Council on Tuesday.
Admiral Samuel Locklear is the senior U.S. military authority in the Pacific. He spoke about the challenges facing the Navy, including looming budget cuts.
He also highlighted how the Navy can adapt to the changing face of conflict around the world.
"We certainly need to reshape our military for this century. It needs to be more agile, more technically competent, more lethal, more sophisticated," he said.
Locklear says the Navy is currently in the process of repositioning 60 percent of its forces to the Asia Pacific.
