"Smart garments" talk to you during your workout

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – They're called "smart garments," and they contain sensors that give you feedback on your mobile device.

"Unlike other wearable technologies, our wearable technology gives you information about how your body moves," Zig Ziglar of Performance 3D said.

Fifteen years ago, while working with motion capture technology, Ziglar, a long-time kinesiologist, realized motion capture could be used for something beyond video games.

"We could take that information and interpret it and figure out exactly how people were moving. We'd be able to go a long way to prevent injuries, improve performances and help athletes achieve their goals," he said.

One athlete in particular was Shaquille O'Neal.

"Used early versions of the technology to improve his free-throw shooting," Ziglar said. "We figured out with technology not the what was wrong with his technique, but what was wrong with his balance and athletic ability."

A career 52 percent free-throw shooter, Ziglar says Shaq shot 73 percent while using the technology. Ziglar says the 3D garments can help any athlete improve.

"Our smart garments will talk to you each step of the way," he said.
