Martinez named head baseball coach at SDSU

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University Wednesday officially elevated Mark Martinez to head baseball coach in the wake of the death of Tony Gwynn.

Martinez, part of the SDSU coaching staff since 2005, led the Aztecs to the NCAA Regionals this spring while Gwynn sat out to battle the cancer that ultimately claimed his life.

Just days before his June 16 death at age 54, Gwynn signed a contract extension to remain head baseball coach and Martinez was made executive head coach.

"Tony is going to be missed," Martinez, 52, said at a news conference. "There's going to be a void there for our staff and players."

In addition to promoting Martinez, pitching coach John Pawlowski was given the title of associate head coach and Joe Oliveira was hired as a full-time assistant after serving as a volunteer coach last season.

Gwynn, a Hall of Fame outfielder and eight-time National League batting champion for the Padres, died following a five-year fight against cancer, which he blamed on chewing tobacco.
