Coalition announces referendum to minimum wage hike

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego Small Business Coalition is asking for your help to stop an increase in the minimum wage.

The coalition announced a referendum Thursday on the City Council's planned 44 percent hike. They say the increase isn't just about the dollars, it's more about the impact on people's lives and their livelihood.

"This payroll increase we've just had from the state, 25 percent, is already putting a crimp in my ability to do things. I've cut my costs every which way I can. The city wants to increase my costs again, 44 percent increase in my payroll. I don't know what I can do other than cutting back hours," small business owner Ann Kinner said.

Minimum wage jumped a dollar to $9 an hour last month. According to the council's plan, it will increase on the first of every year until it hits $11.50 in 2017.

Further increases based on inflation begin in January 2019.
