Fire at Joan Embery's Lakeside ranch

Posted: Updated:

LAKESIDE (CBS 8) – Firefighters in Lakeside put out a fire before it could spread to the horse corral on Joan Embery's land.

She is the San Diego Zoo ambassador and world-renown environmentalist, conservationist and preservationist.

She and her husband, Duane Pillsbury own Pillsbury Land and Livestock where horses, zebras, cheetah and exotic animals roam on 50 acres.

Just before 3 p.m. on Friday, a fire in trailer home on the land caught fire and spread to a Pepper tree. Firefighters say it melted a horse trailer but not other damage.

“The main concern was the smoke columns the main concern was the spots and embers around structures around property and vegetation,” said Lakeside Fire Protection Division Fire Chief Chuck Tockstein.

Cell phone video from a driver passing by the scene caught video of an orange flame shooting up from behind the corral and a pop as if a propane tank burst.

Embery told CBS News 8 that the animals or horses were not injured, evacuated or in danger during the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
