Video captures trolley security guards appearing to beat passenger

La Mesa police are investigating the alleged brutal beating of a trolley passenger by two security guards captured on surveillance video Monday afternoon.
La Mesa (CBS 8) - La Mesa police are investigating the alleged brutal beating of a trolley passenger by two security guards captured on surveillance video Monday afternoon.

The video, provided by the MTS, shows two uniformed Transit Systems Security (TSS) officers boarding the trolley at Grossmont Trolley Station, appearing to follow a male passenger. Moments later, the guards can be seen pummeling the man in the background of the video, as other passengers observe, but do not intervene. Some passengers can be seen videotaping the incident on their cell phones.

"It appears at this time that the actions taken by the security officers were unacceptable," said Paul Jablonski, chief executive officer of MTS. "MTS and TSS do not tolerate the inappropriate use of force by its employees or those of its contractors."

According to the MTS, the passenger who was allegedly beaten was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The two TSS employees have been suspended as investigations by both La Mesa police and the MTS continue.

"The video depicting the incident is disturbing and not reflective of TSS culture," said Steve Jones, CEO of transit Systems Security. "Our top priority is to ensure that MTS passengers enjoy a safe and secure public transportation experience. We are investigating this incident thoroughly and if any violation of TSS policy and procedures are found to have occurred, swift and appropriate personnel action will be taken."
