Two of Woodland Hills top cosmetic dentists, Dr. Mamaly Reshad and Dr. Saj Jivraj of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute, deal with serious and complicated dental problems: cancer, missing teeth, diseased gums and complex oral surgery.

So patients can be reluctant to bring up what they deem as small problems, such as sores left from biting their lip or gums.

The problem is, not all of these sores are actually caused by the accidental bite, Dr. Reshad said. This canker or cold sore could have appeared before the bite, and that is how the patient discovered it.

Dr. Reshad and Dr. Jivraj want to offer these five tips of what to do if you bite your tongue or lip and develop (or discover) a canker or cold sore:

1. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water or apply ice.

2. If a sore develops, try applying a mixture of hydrogen peroxide or baking soda and water.

3. If a canker sore lingers more than two weeks, check with your doctor about a vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.

4. If a cold sore lingers more than two weeks, check with your doctor about whether antiviral medication could help you.

5. See your dentist. People who frequently bite their lips, cheek or tongue may have misaligned teeth (natural or prosthetic).

Most people consider these incidents minor, Dr. Jivraj said, but they could be the first signs of a major problem.

Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are award-winning prosthodontists. They are specialists in implant, cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. Both are former chairmen of the University of Southern California School of Dentistrys Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry section. They also are international lecturers and published authors.

Dr. Jivraj earned his degree at the University of Manchester in his native England. He received advanced prosthodontic training at the USC School of Dentistry. He has published numerous articles on aesthetic and implant dentistry in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented on implant dentistry and advanced prosthodontic procedures nationally and internationally.

Dr. Jivraj is co-author of the textbook Treatment Planning in Implant Dentistry, which is used around the world. He is on the editorial board of the highly prestigious Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and is associate clinical editor for Dental Teamwork magazine.

He currently holds a faculty position as an associate clinical professor at the USC School of Dentistry, clinical teacher at the Eastman Dental Institute in London and is on the board of directors for the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

Jivraj was voted Best of USA by his peers in 2008.

Dr. Reshad, a fellow prosthodontist, is an internationally known expert in restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks on various topics related to prosthodontics, aesthetics and implant dentistry.

Dr. Reshad trained at Kings College Dental School followed by the Eastman Dental Institute in London.

Dr. Reshad is on the editorial board for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is an honorary clinical teacher at the Eastman Dental Institute and a member of the faculty of the Global Institute for Dental Education.
