Padre fans not pleased with plans to honor Selig

A petition is gaining signatures calling on the San Diego Padres to stop the name of the Hall of the Fame Plaza after MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A petition is gaining signatures calling on the
San Diego Padres
to stop the name of the Hall of the Fame Plaza after MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.

The petition on
change.org
gained more than 800 signatures by 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night, just one day after revealing the name of Bud Selig Hall of Fame Plaza.

“Are they going to change it? Absolutely not,” said
Friarhood.com
owner, Steve Adler.

He is a loyal Padres fan and started the petition Wednesday morning. He used to be the host for AM 1360 in San Diego and is not happy with Padres Brass and not having a team make it the playoffs in 8 years, among other things.

“I don't think it's a matter of people giving up on baseball or giving up on the Padres per say, it's just a matter of I'm not going to give you my money anymore,” said Adler.

Fans during Wednesday night's game at Petco Park stopped to look at the new sign, “Coming Soon Selig Hall of Fame Plaza.”

“Oh yeah that's awful,” said Mark Walter.

Some think the Padres made the right decision.

“I think it's good, I think he deserves it,” said Adrian Lopez.

Some fans believe the name was to help gain leverage to host an All-Star game. Others wish it could be named after Padre greats such as Tony Gwynn, Jerry Coleman or Trevor Hoffman.

The Padres president knows the fans are pitching a fit and that's why Mike Dee got on Padres Social Hour to take fan questions.

“I hope fans understand without Commissioner Selig I really have questions to whether or not the Padres would be playing in San Diego today,” said Dee.

Fans thought Dee didn't make it better and was insulting Padre fans.

“The comments Mike Dee said today were completely baseless and showed no truth or regard for the actual fans who care about the Padres,” said Scott Sibley.

Despite hearing fans out, Dee says the name won't change, “Absolutely no regrets. This was the right thing to do.”

At the end of the social hour, Dee said if there were any regrets about naming the Hall of Fame Plaza after Bud Selig it would be to have better communication with the fans before revealing the name.

Some of the fans are voicing concern about wanting to remove their memorial bricks from the Hall of Fame but Dee says the bricks are not part of the Bud Selig Hall of Fame Plaza but part of Palm Court.

Trevor Hoffman will be inducted in the Padre Hall of Fame on Saturday.
