Investigators suspect arson in restaurant fire

NATIONAL CITY (CBS 8) - A seafood restaurant in National City is in shambles and all that's left are charred remains.

Investigators say it was foul play caused by an arsonist. Police called firefighters when they happened to drive by the 300 block of Highland Avenue and noticed heavy flames Friday morning.

Firefighters tried to knock down the front door of the Rincon Del Mar and Mariscos Seafood Restaurant. Flames shot through the entrance windows.

They managed to pry it open with a crowbar. Crews maneuvered a fire hose through the restaurant.

Firefighters climbed to the roof to cut a hole and ventilate flames, which investigators say started by a wooden door near the front entrance. They think that's suspicious.

There is heavy smoke and fire damage and it's a total loss. Investigators say the flames were sparked by arsonist.

"It appears to be that a window was broken into to have access into the building. We have some individuals the police department is talking to at this time but nobody specific at this time," National City fire investigator, Robert Hernandez, said.

Crews contained the fire in 20 minutes and prevented it from spreading to next door businesses.

This same restaurant made headlines in June during the World Cup. Police say a group of men were fighting outside. One pulled out a gun and started shooting. A man was killed.

The restaurant owner says he doesn't know who would want to cause his business harm or who may have set the fire.

Police have not made any arrests but according to witnesses a number of men were seen near the restaurant around the time of the fire.
