Successful turnout at gun exchange event

People with unwanted firearms have a chance Saturday to convert the weapons' into groceries or -- for those with a yen for sidewalk-surfing -- skateboards.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Dozens of San Diegans got rid of their unwanted guns this morning in Valencia Park.

The "gun exchange" program is in an effort to create a safer San Diego and get guns off the streets.

Participants lined up at Bryco Business Park, and were able to exchange their firearms for a gift card worth up to $200 -- or new this year -- a brand new skateboard valued at $200.

"I had a gun collecting dust and it's been collecting dust in my family for probably 30 years and no one has fired it or anything. It could always fall in the wrong hands if it got burglarized or something," said Steven.

According to the San Diego Police Department, 115 guns were stolen this year in San Diego.

Organizers say all collected weapons will be destroyed.
