New York / Berlin (PRWEB) September 04, 2014

artnet Auctions is pleased to present California Cool, a special sale highlighting a range of works by Californias most prominent artists. Focusing on the West Coasts established influence on the art world, this dedicated sale includes a number of works by Ken Price, Joe Goode, Billy Al Bengston, Ronald Davis, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, David Hockney, Raymond Pettibon, John Baldessari, Sam Francis, Richard Diebenkorn, and Wayne Thiebaud, among others. Estimates in the sale range from US$1,500 to 120,000, and features paintings, prints, and works on paper.

Among the sales highlights are two important paintings from Joe Goodes early Vandalism series in the 1970s. Estimated at US$70,000 to 100,000, Goodes monumental triptych features his beautiful cloud imagery, punctuated by patches of torn canvas; only one Vandalism triptych by the artist has ever come to auction, realizing nearly US$200,000. A smaller work from the same series is also on the auction block, estimated at US$20,000 to 30,000. Further complimenting Goodes diverse range of work is a spectacular and subtle gunpowder drawing estimated at US$15,000 to 20,000, which immediately recalls the artists close association with his California contemporary Ed Ruscha, who is also featured in the sale.

Ed Ruscha's Los-Angeles themed lithograph Vine/Melrose, estimated at US$4,000 to 6,000, marks the intersection of two well-known streets that are part of the Los Angeles lexicon. Another notable work in the sale is a dynamic and colorful monotype by Sam Francis from 1981, estimated at US$15,000 to 20,000. Most recently, Franciss monotypes have become especially sought after, and this work on handmade paper recalls the artists bold palette, but also shows inspiration from fellow Californian Richard Diebenkorn, and Color Field artist Kenneth Noland.

Several works by British artist David Hockney, who maintains a residence in California, are also on offer. Two works from his 1993 series Some New Prints, Blue Hang Cliff, estimated at US$10,000 to 12,000, and Warm Start, estimated at US$6,000 to 8,000, are included in the sale. These colorful works were printed and published by the important California printer-publisher Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles.

Artworks by other California artists are also well represented in this sale, including Wayne Thiebauds depictions of everyday objects. The artists signature repetition is seen in Glasses (from Seven Still Lifes and a Rabbit), a large and rare lithograph, estimated at US$10,000 to 12,000, that depicts several pairs of reading glasses arranged in rows, reminiscent of his delicatessen subjects. Cigars (from Recent Etchings II), an aquatint estimated at US$6,000 to 8,000, turns the cigars smoke into blue California sky.
