New study examines hunger in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A recently completed study is shedding new light on hunger in San Diego.

The study was done by the San Diego branch of Feeding America. It found that 72 percent of the organization's clients had an ongoing need for food. Twenty-four percent had a family member that was in poor health, and more than half of the respondents said they have to choose between food, utilities and medicine.

"This heightens our awareness of our responsibility to provide healthy food and to do our part to prevent chronic illnesses associated with the lack of nutrition," FASD Board of Directors Chair Jan Lezny said.

The study also highlighted challenges facing San Diego's military community -- 27 percent of respondents said they had served or were currently serving in the U.S. military.
