Severe drought conditions affecting San Diego Food Bank

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A huge donation of fresh produce was delivered to the San Diego Food Bank Thursday.

A group called California Water Feeds Our Communities made the generous donation of four semi-trucks filled with produce. It will go to the families of agricultural workers who are unemployed because of the severe drought and unable to get food on the table.

The San Diego Food Bank serves 370,000 people every month, but the drought is making it increasingly difficult.

"Because one, the cost of the fresh produce is going to go up significantly because of the lack of water and lack of availability of fresh produce, and joblessness will increase," Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank President and CEO James Floros said.

Last year, the food bank distributed more than 22 million pounds of food throughout San Diego County -- 8 million pounds of that was fresh produce.
