4.2 quake off Mexico coast felt in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

IMPERIAL BEACH (CNS) - An early morning earthquake off the coast of Rosarito Beach, Mexico was widely felt in San Diego County early Sunday.

Automated sensors indicated that the magnitude 4.2 temblor hit at 4:13 a.m. with an epicenter 34 miles west-southwest of Rosarito Beach, or 38 miles west-southwest of Imperial Beach.

That reading was preliminary and subject to change. The USGS network of seismographs does not have a robust data-gathering system in Mexico, and early quake data from south of the border are frequently revised.

People reported feeling light shaking in San Diego, and as far inland as Valley Center and Alpine, according to reports posted to a USGS site.
