Man to return to San Diego in wife's murder

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego man arrested in Hawaii in connection with the death of his wife, whose body was found near a desert campground seven years ago, waived extradition today and will be brought back to San Diego to face murder charges.

Anthony Edward Simoneau, 46, was taken into custody last Thursday in the death of 41-year-old Fumiko Ogawa Simoneau, San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings said.

At a hearing Monday in front of Circuit Court Judge Richard Perkins in Honolulu, the defendant agreed to be transported back to San Diego within 30 days. An exact date for extradition will not be made public for security reasons, officials said.

The victim's body was found near the Bow Willow Campground in the Anza-Borrego Desert on Jan. 20, 2007, according to Hastings. The county Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide.

Park rangers and the county sheriff's department conducted the initial investigation into her death, but Hastings said the District Attorney's Office would now become the lead agency.
