SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A man in a wheelchair was rescued from a canyon in Balboa Park Monday.

A park ranger was walking near Sixth Avenue and Balboa Drive around 2 p.m. when he heard the man calling for help. When fire crews arrived, they found the man about 30 feet down an embankment. They believe he had been there for several hours.

"We came out, we set a real quick low angle rescue system. Brought him up to the top of the canyon that way," San Diego Fire-Rescue Captain Jeff Cheek said.

The man was taken to UCSD Medical Center to be checked out.

Authorities haven't said how he fell down into the canyon.
