Argument leads to gunfire, evacuations and arrest

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A man is in the hospital Wednesday morning with a gunshot wound to the head, after an argument between neighbors takes a dangerous turn in Spring Valley.

The shooting in the 3100 block of Sweetwater Springs Boulevard near Loma Lane was reported shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff's Lt. Christine Robbins. That's when two neighbors started arguing. Neighbors say the argument may have started over a noisy phone conversation between two residents.

During the incident shots were fired and a bullet grazed the head of the 36-year-old victim. After sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene, they surrounded the area as they looked for the man who started the chaos at the apartment complex.

Finally, after nearly three hours, the alleged shooter Kamran Guster, 25, gave himself up along with his pregnant girlfriend.

"We made about four verbal call outs to the apartment we believed the suspect was in. The suspect and another person opened the door and gave up without any further issue," Sgt. Karla Taft with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

During the standoff, nearly a dozen people were evacuated for safety reasons, but were allowed to return to their homes after police cleared the scene.

"We heard four to six rounds go off and it happened pretty fast and we were both shocked," neighbor Molly Heinrichs said.

A resident, who is a woman in the military, initially called 911. She wanted to remain anonymous, but says the fight started when a woman had a noisy conversation on her phone outside.

"I heard it briefly. It was about a phone call. She was angry about somebody not answering her text messages. I thought it was silly to have this loud conversation at night," the woman said.

She says two men were staring at a pregnant woman from a balcony. Then the fight broke out.

Neighbors believe the man suffers from PTSD and may be a veteran and say many of the people in the apartment complex are military families.

The man who was shot was rushed to Mercy Hospital. As of this report, he is listed in good condition.

Evidence technicians remained on the scene taking pictures and investigating the crime scene. Detectives removed weapons from a second floor apartment as evidence.
